The client operates in a highly specialized sector with very few global competitors—but those few publish a large volume of patent documentation. Their main challenges were:
• Understanding their positioning relative to competitors.
• Gaining visibility into what others are developing.
• Identifying potential infringement risks to their proprietary solutions.

The solution

• We implemented a biannual monitoring system focused on the patent activity of key competitors, fully customized to the client’s needs. Specifically:
• We collect and classify new patent documents based on a custom taxonomy, tailored to the technical features and functions most relevant to the client.
• We highlight documents that fall outside the existing classification, indicating emerging technological directions that were not previously anticipated.
• For each outlier, we report who is moving in that direction and how.

The measurable results

• Identified 7 new technology categories not yet covered by the client.
• 3 categories integrated into the client’s internal classification for ongoing surveillance and competitive tracking.
